And like you, I prefer this one to any of its sequels and prequels. I adored Alien, even more than Aliens a film that a lot of critics regard as superior of the two.

One of the first things that impressed me with this film was that unlike most typical SF scenarios, the Nostromo is a very dirty and unkempt ship, which is something that goes against the typical grain of clean sterile ships one sees on traditional SF films.

It was also a pleasure to see Ripley take the bull by the horns and become the dominant leader of a very decreasing crew - even taking time out to retrieve Jones the cat from the clutches of the alien near the end.

The only issue I didn't really like was seeing Ripley in her underwear trying to slip into a space suit, but with the camera spending far too much time brooding over her breasts and knickers. But apart from that, this film is exceptionally good, with super artwork, brilliant lighting and perhaps one of the greatest shock moments in cinema history with Kane giving "birth" to the baby alien,.

I suppose in some respects this film is like Jaws in space, both enjoying some excellent suspense and surprises. I'm continually amazed and disappointed at the increasing number of sequels churned out for our entertainment. I'd rather have quality over quantity any day of the week and I suspect that most cinema-goers would as well.

I agree that this is the best entry in the Alien series. In addition to the points you mentioned, I thought the invincibility of the creature itself added to the terror and the tension. Other changes in the Director's Cut: As in the Theatrical Version, Brett stops in the the landing strut chamber to wet his face during the sequence where he is searching for Jones the cat. In the Directors Cut, we see a shot looking up at the landing strut with the Alien rather unexpectedly in the foreground, head bowed, swaying from side to side. Another change concerning Jones the cat: when Ripley encounters the Alien in the corridor having just set the self-destruct sequence, instead of the Alien looking curiously at Jones in his cat box, it gives him a brief glance before violently swatting the box aside.

This explains why in both versions of the film the cat box is flipped on its side and not where Ripley left it when she returns to collect Jones.

Many of the restored scenes have alternate takes or even total re-edits from the deleted scenes on the Laserdisc and original DVD releases.
